Constructionline is a UK pre-qualification service: you keep your company, insurance and health and safety evidence in one verified profile, and buyers who use it accept that profile instead of sending you their own questionnaire. It has four paid levels, Bronze to Platinum. Of the 557 UK work-winning gates we track, 99 mention it.
That 99 is the headline most people would stop at. It is also misleading, and the reason why is the most useful thing in this post. Almost everything written about Constructionline comes from firms that sell help getting through it, so the question they answer is "how do I reach Gold". I run a subcontracting model - win the work, sub the delivery, keep the spread - and I maintain a verified directory of where UK construction work is actually bought. So I can answer a better question: which level does the buyer you want actually ask for?
What Constructionline actually is
A buyer who hires contractors has to check they are competent, insured and financially sound. A Tier 1 with thousands of subcontractors cannot read every insurance schedule and method statement itself every year, so it outsources the checking. Constructionline is one of the biggest places it gets outsourced to. You answer the questions once, Constructionline verifies the answers, and every buyer on the platform can see the result.
Two things make it different from a pure health and safety scheme like CHAS:
- It is a buyer network as well as a badge. Large contractors run their supply-chain recruitment through it. Several of the gates in our directory are literally "register via Constructionline", with a buyer-specific code to attach your profile to their list.
- It covers more than health and safety. The higher levels verify corporate standing, financial and professional information and, at Gold, the full Common Assessment Standard - the industry's shared pre-qualification question set.
It is not a licence, not a qualification, and it does not send you work on its own. It is a filter. It removes a reason for a buyer who already wants you to say no.
Bronze to Platinum: what each level adds
Constructionline's own membership page lays the levels out as a ladder, each step containing everything below it:
| Level | What it adds | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Associate | A searchable profile. No SSIP, no verification | Being findable, nothing more |
| Bronze | Insurance and SSIP health and safety data through a simplified question set, verified membership, Once For All Health and Safety | Buyers who ask for "Constructionline, Bronze minimum" or just "SSIP" |
| Silver | Verification of corporate and professional standing | Buyers who set Silver as their floor |
| Gold | Common Assessment Standard certification and Building Safety Act assessments, as a desktop review | Tier 1s and landlords who ask for Gold or CAS |
| Platinum | Everything in Gold plus a one-day audit at your premises | Buyers who want the CAS evidence checked on site |
The line that matters most for a small firm: every paid level includes an SSIP-recognised health and safety assessment. So Bronze on its own already clears a form that says "SSIP accreditation required", the same sentence a CHAS or SafeContractor certificate clears.
The second line that matters: Gold is where the Common Assessment Standard comes in. CAS is the shared question set that CHAS, Achilles, CQMS, SCCS and Constructionline all certify against, and buyers who have standardised on it will often accept any of those five. That is why some gates in our directory read "Constructionline Gold or CAS" rather than Gold alone.
What it costs
Here is the honest version, which you will not find in a neat table anywhere, because Constructionline does not publish one.
Every level is priced by annual turnover band, and the price is generated by a calculator when you sign up. What is on the record:
- Constructionline's own FAQ says annual membership starts from £219 a year, excluding VAT, at the smallest band.
- Compliance brokers reported smallest-band prices in 2025 of Bronze £319, Gold £599 and Platinum £2,549, plus a one-off joining fee in year one, reported at £99 for the smallest band.
- Older figures of £249, £499 and £2,299 are still widely republished. They are out of date.
Add VAT to all of it. From year two you pay the annual fee only.
I am deliberately not giving you a single number per level, because any single number goes stale and becomes a false claim the day Constructionline moves its bands. Use these as a floor, run the calculator with your own turnover, and look at the gap between Gold and Platinum before you let anyone talk you upwards. It is the biggest jump on the ladder by a distance.
Who actually asks for it: the 99, taken apart
We maintain a directory of 557 verified UK work-winning gates - portals, supply chains, frameworks, landlords and networks through which construction work is bought - each with a researched record of what it demands at signup. Counting every gate whose requirements mention Constructionline gives 99 of 557, as of September 2026. Now take it apart:
| What the mention actually is | Gates |
|---|---|
| A Constructionline field on the portal's registration form (mostly standard In-Tend fields) | 48 |
| One of several accepted options for SSIP or CAS, or "commonly requested per tender" | 21 |
| Named only in passing, with no requirement attached | 4 |
| An explicit Constructionline membership requirement, usually with a level | 21 |
| Constructionline's own entries in the directory | 5 |
The 48 are the trap. A housing association portal with a box labelled "Constructionline number" is not telling you to buy Constructionline - it is a field on a software template that most suppliers leave blank. Counting it as demand is how the "you need Constructionline for everything" advice gets written.
The 21 explicit requirements come from 16 distinct buyers (some appear under more than one gate). By level:
- Gold named: 6 - Kier (Gold or any CAS certificate), Amey, Laing O'Rourke, Robertson Group (mandatory, existing Bronze and Silver members must upgrade), Hyde, and Ian Williams (stated as a preference, not an absolute).
- Silver minimum: 3 - Seddon, Sir Robert McAlpine, and The Hill Group (Silver or Gold).
- Bronze minimum: 3 - Wates, Fortem and Novus.
- Level set per contract or unstated: 4 - Balfour Beatty and VINCI Facilities set it per contract, Portsmouth City Council and the National Trust name Constructionline without a tier.
- Platinum named: 0. Not one of the 557 gates asks for Platinum.
Read that as a map. Constructionline demand is a Tier 1 and major-contractor signal: the firms holding big repairs, maintenance and build contracts use it to recruit their supply chains. It is weaker with councils, where it shows up per tender rather than at registration, and almost absent from trade marketplaces and consumer platforms, which care about reviews and ID checks.
If Tier 1 supply chains are your lane, the level decision is simple: look up the three or four Tier 1s you actually want to sub for, write down the level each one names, and buy the highest of those. Usually that is Bronze or Gold. It is almost never Platinum.
When you do not need Constructionline
Keep the money, for now, if any of these are true:
- Your buyers say "SSIP", not "Constructionline". Any SSIP member scheme clears that sentence. In our directory 111 gates ask for "an SSIP scheme" without naming one. If you already hold CHAS or another member scheme, check mutual recognition before paying for a second health and safety assessment.
- Your target buyers only have a Constructionline box on the form. That is a template field, not a requirement. Register without it and see whether the buyer asks.
- Your work comes from homeowners, marketplaces or word of mouth. Those buyers do not look at pre-qualification profiles.
- You have no named buyer yet. A Gold profile with no buyer behind it is an annual subscription to a filing cabinet. Pick the lane, name the buyers, then buy the level they wrote down.
- Someone is selling you Platinum "to stand out". Nobody in our 557 asks for it. Stand out with the work.
Pre-qualification does not win work. It stops a buyer who already wants you from having a reason to say no.
What it takes to hold a level
The subscription is the visible cost and usually the smaller one. To pass and keep passing you need current insurance certificates, health and safety policy, risk assessments, method statements, training records and, from Silver up, company and financial information that holds up to a check. At Platinum, someone comes to your premises to confirm it.
If you run real jobs and keep real records, that is a few evenings of admin once a year. If your paperwork is not in order, the fee is the smallest thing you are about to spend - fix the records first, because they are what the profile certifies. The contractors I have seen get burned are the ones who bought a level as a marketing purchase and then could not produce the evidence behind it at the first audit.
Where this sits in the bigger picture
Constructionline is one gate among many. The model I teach in what construction arbitrage is only works if you know which gates your buyers actually stand behind, which is why I keep the directory rather than an opinion. The full breakdown of the 557 by buyer type is in where to find construction contracts in the UK, and if councils are your target, the registration route is in how to get onto a council approved contractor list.
A note on the numbers: the counts come from our own requirements dataset covering all 557 UK gates, researched from each buyer's registration pages, not from Constructionline marketing. Buyers change their forms, so the counts carry a date and get recomputed when we refresh. If a buyer you care about has changed what it asks for, its form beats my count. Prices were checked against Constructionline's membership page and FAQ and the most recent broker-published figures; Constructionline's calculator is the only price that binds.
Last checked: 29 September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is Constructionline?+
Constructionline is a UK pre-qualification service for construction and facilities management suppliers. You hold your company, insurance, health and safety and compliance information in one verified profile, and buyers who use Constructionline accept that profile instead of sending you their own questionnaire. Every paid level includes an SSIP-recognised health and safety assessment, Once For All Health and Safety, and the Gold level adds certification to the industry's Common Assessment Standard.
What is the difference between Constructionline Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum?+
Each level adds a layer of checking. Bronze verifies your insurance and SSIP health and safety data through a simplified question set. Silver adds verification of corporate and professional standing. Gold adds Common Assessment Standard certification and Building Safety Act assessments, done as a desktop review. Platinum is everything in Gold plus a one-day audit at your premises. There is also a free-standing Associate listing below Bronze, which gives you a searchable profile but no SSIP and no verification.
How much does Constructionline cost?+
Constructionline prices every level by annual turnover band and quotes through a calculator at signup rather than publishing a flat price table. Its own FAQ says annual membership starts from £219 a year excluding VAT at the smallest band. Compliance brokers reported smallest-band prices in 2025 of £319 for Bronze, £599 for Gold and £2,549 for Platinum, plus a one-off joining fee in year one reported at £99. Treat every published figure, including these, as a floor and get your own quote on the day.
Do I need Constructionline Gold?+
Only if the buyer you are chasing asks for it. Of the 557 UK work-winning gates we track, six name Gold as their level as of September 2026 - among them Kier, Amey, Laing O'Rourke, Robertson Group and Hyde - and Kier accepts any Common Assessment Standard certificate as an alternative. Three name Bronze as the minimum and three name Silver. None of the 557 asks for Platinum. Buy the level your named buyer writes on its form, not the level above it.
Is Constructionline the same as SSIP?+
No. SSIP is the umbrella body for health and safety pre-qualification schemes, and Constructionline's Once For All Health and Safety assessment is one of its recognised members. That is why a paid Constructionline level satisfies a buyer whose form says 'SSIP accreditation required'. It does not work the other way round: a buyer who names Constructionline wants a Constructionline profile, and a CHAS or SafeContractor certificate will not always be accepted in its place.
